Waste Energy Utilisation

British Flame Technical Meeting

Corus Swinden Technology Centre, Swindon UK

Location: NAMTEC - Corus Swinden Technology Centre Site, Moorgate Road, Rotherham

Contact information: J M Rhine or J D Massingham

Available documentation:

The British Flame Research Comittee, in collaboration with The Institute of Physics Combustion Physics Group offers a 1-day technical meeting entitled WASTE ENERGY UTILIZATION and aimed at energy managers, energy policymakers, equipment manufacturers, research practitioners and students; performance & economic system modellers.

The meeting will examine short, medium and longer-term measures and strategies to improve Waste energy utilization.  Whilst the focus will be on low-grade fuels and heat below 500°C, diverse processes will be discussed.

Best practice schemes already in use address operational issues such as high-efficiency flue gas heat recovery technologies, control systems, base load reduction and the like.  Advanced systems may include low-grade heat recovery using specialized heat engines and heat exchangers with new materials, integrated processes, utilization of waste energy streams, and process adaptations.

Papers scheduled to be presented

  1. Alternative thermal cycles for conversion of waste heat below 500°C to electricity
George Atkinson  et al, Parsons Brinckerhoff
  2. Innovative heat recovery solutions using the Econotherm heat pipe technology
Chris Bayliss & Mark Boocock, Econotherm Ltd
  3. Thermal management and demand in Process Industries
Andrew Hopkins & Tim O’Doherty, Corus & Cardiff University
  4. Electric power generation from waste heat sources by Organic Rankine Cycle
Clive Whitbourn & Roger Mallinson, DRD Power Ltd
  5. Oxyfuel combustion of low calorific blast furnace gas for steel reheating furnaces
Mark Cole & Joseph Ho, BOC
  6. Energy recovery in the sugar manufacturing process
    Michael Karamani, British Sugar
  7. Power generation from industrial waste heat with ORC technology
    Johan Vergouwen, Maxxtec Benelux
  8. Mapping for energy recovery: A case study
    John Martin ABB
  9. Low Grade Thermal Energy Recovery by Drying Biomass and Industrial Condensing Boilers
    Q. Chen, H. Li, X. Zhang, V. Sharifi & J. Swithenbank, University of Sheffield
